Medicare DMEPOS Supplier Standards

This is an abbreviated version of the supplier standards every Medicare DMEPOS supplier must meet in order to obtain and retain their billing privileges. These standards, in their entirety, are listed in 42 C.F.R. 424.57(c).

Break In Process, Care and Maintenance of Your Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO)

This applies to custom AFO or off the shelf (OTS) AFO. Please be seated for donning your AFO to avoid injuries. If the foot plate of the AFO is full length (plastic comes all the way to the toes) you may want to remove the original insert that is inside the shoe to allow more space in the shoe to accommodate the AFO.

Break in Process, Care and Maintenance of Your Foot Orthosis (FO)

This applies to all functional, accommodative, and multidensity (diabetic) foot orthotics regardless of the materials. Follow the break in process below to allow a break in period for your foot to properly adjust to the FO. Custom foot orthosis help redistribute weight and pressure to the feet and reduces stress on the feet.

Break In Process, Care and Maintenance of Your Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)

This applies to custom and off the shelf (OTS) KAFO.  It is recommended that a thin undersleeve, such as tubing sock, is worn on the leg that is using the brace to act as a barrier between the brace and the skin. This will minimize the chances of excessive pressure area, skin irritation, and skin break down.

Break In Process, Care and Maintenance of Your Orthopedic Shoe

Always wear socks with shoes to reflect proper wearing of shoes. Follow the break-in period and process below to allow your feet to adjust to the new shoes.  During the break in period, wear the shoes in the house to avoid damaging the shoes.

Use, Care and Maintenance of Your Thoracolumbosacral Orthosis (TLSO)

Because a TLSO can be design with a variety of opening tailoring to a patient’s injury, the below instructions on wearing and removing the brace is only for a posterior custom TLSO.  When available, the literature on instructions of use, care and maintenance from the manufacturer will be provided to the patient, should the custom TLSO was manufactured by a vendor other than Sean Orthotics LLC.
